toll gate girl

the other day the three occupants of 23-2 belgrove stayed up for most of the night. no, unfortunately we weren't studying like we were supposed to considering exams are just around the corner. actually, last night we watched the malay telemovie toll gate girl starring amy mastura and rashid salleh. yeah, you might think "what, takde citer lain ke?" i thought so too at first but right after the opening montage we were immediately glued to our seats. it's not because of the storyline which was so so, it's not because of the typical malay tv humour of hindustan movies and funny lines.
it was because of where it was set, in good old malaysia.

the whole room went silent when we saw klcc in the background, the place where we used to hang out. we were all reminiscing when we saw jalan masjid jamek and i think somebody screamed when we saw markonah (amy mastura's character) walked through a pasar ramadhan. ahh... when will i go to another pasar ramadhan, trying out all those malaysian delicacies? heck, we even missed the PLUS highway and everybody was pointing out prominent landmarks along the route markonah made to reach her 'kampung'. it's sad i know. maybe it's because we're barely three months here in dublin and malaysia had been our home for almost two decades.

i learned two lessons after i watched the movie.

1. appreciate malaysian movies. i must admit that i am not a fan of malay movies. but somebody got to support the industry. and if it's not us than who will? once the support is there, quality will follow.

2. appreciate malaysia. there's nothing quite like malaysia and we need to protect it. maybe that's one objective of the government to send students overseas, to make them appreciate of what they'd left behind.

malaysia, i will return for good someday, insyaAllah.
